M1 Special Purpose Vehicles

Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) are M1-based vehicles built to perform a specific function that requires special body arrangements and/or equipment — the most common example in our client base being ambulances and patient transport vehicles, but the classification also covers other purpose-built conversions carrying no more than eight passengers plus driver.

SPV approval carries additional technical requirements on top of standard M1 type approval, including specific provisions around the equipment area, patient/passenger compartment layout, and — for ambulances — compliance with the relevant harmonised standard for the ambulance body and equipment. Getting this classification and its supporting technical file right at the design stage avoids costly rework later.

Sonas Consulting supports SPV manufacturers and converters through:

Classification guidance — confirming whether a build qualifies as an SPV and, if so, which sub-category and technical requirements apply.
Preparation of the Information Document and supporting technical justification for SPV-specific requirements.
Coordination with Technical Services for any additional testing or assessment the SPV classification requires.
Ongoing Conformity of Production support once approval is granted.

Given our direct experience with ambulance and patient transport conversions, we understand both the regulatory and the practical operational requirements that shape an SPV build.
